Mr. Maxcy D. Filer, popularly referred to as "Mr. Compton," was born in Marianna, Arkansas, on June 29, 1930. He attended the present-day University of Arkansas in Pine Bluff after serving in the Army, and he subsequently pursued his dental technician studies at Elkhart Business University in Indiana. After Filer's Elkhart graduation in 1952, he relocated to Compton, California. He worked as a milk delivery man and a parking lot attendant, he balanced other jobs until graduating from the now closed Non-Traditional law school Van Norman Law School in 1966 with a law degree. He began preparing for the bar exam a year later. After 48 tries he finally passed in 1991.
